UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF WEB HOSTING

As suggested, hosting is a complicated business, there are so many options out there but we have focussed our research on managed hosting providers as we understand that most readers don’t have the technical expertise required to set up and manage their own tech stack.

With the realm of managed hosting there are different levels of hosting that come with an understandable range of pricing. Some of the hosting types you’ll encounter are:

SHARED HOSTING

This option is the most common for smaller websites and is the cheapest option. In a shared web hosting environment there will be multiple websites hosted on a single server. Each website has a share of the server resources so it’s wise to note and compare the resource limits of the various hosting providers when considering this option.

Virtual Private Servers (VPS Hosting)

The next level up from shared hosting is a VPS. Unlike shared hosting a Virtual Private Server setup uses Virtualisation software to essentially allow a single server to be partitioned to operate like multiple servers. This means you don’t need to share resources with other customers and provides an extra layer of security.

Dedicated Hosting

Stepping up another level from the VPS we have the Dedicated Server option. Unlike a VPS which still hosts multiple websites on one server, a Dedicated Hosting Server is, as the name would suggest, yours and yours alone. Most users reading this article won’t require such a robust setup but for those who have more complex technical requirements or process high volumes of transaction then Dedicated Hosting is definitely worth considering.

Cloud Hosting

The concept of cloud computing has become increasingly popular in recent times. The idea of hosting assets on multiple connected servers has led to the evolution of cloud web hosting where your website files are stored on multiple servers, allowing for greater flexibility when scaling your resource requirements. Cloud Hosting is well suited to users who have outgrown the allocated resources available with their shared hosting plan.

AUSTRALIAN WEB HOSTING PROVIDERS WE THINK ARE GREAT

SITEGROUND

BEST OVERALL HOSTING PROVIDER

Given how popular WordPress is for building websites we felt it was important to highlight who we felt was the best WordPress hosting company and that award goes to Siteground.

Great Balance Of Speed vs Price

Site speed is taken to another level at Siteground, with the lightning fast Google Cloud servers and custom caching system (Supercacher). If speed is your #1 priority then Siteground is the best value for money option. Go with the GrowBig or GoGeek plans to get even faster TTFB and overall speed with their custom PHP setup.

Top Notch Security

The team at Siteground takes security very seriously. So much so that they were one of the first web hosts to offer free SSL to their customers, which you typically had to pay for in the past and they weren’t cheap.

In addition they run daily scans for malicious code, actively maintain a custom web application firewall and have an inbuilt anti-bot detection system to block millions of security threats every day. We think this level of focus on security makes Siteground one of the best hosting companies out there.

24/7 Customer Support

The customer support at Siteground is excellent. They offer multi-channel support via phone, live chat & support tickets as well as a comprehensive knowledge base with tutorials covering a wide range of topics.

The live chat and phone support is virtually instant response while the support ticket response is an impressively quick 10 minutes on average backing up the argument that Siteground provides some of the best web hosting services available. Choose the GoGeek plan to get advanced priority support.

Host Multiple Sites

If you have multiple sites you need to host then Siteground’s GrowBig & GoGeek plans offer the option to do so. Both plans also offer an easy to use staging tool when you need to make substantial updates to the site and test on staging before deploying to the live site.

Intuitive User Interface

In recent years Siteground made the decision to move away from traditional cPanel and built their own custom dashboard which is much more intuitive and easy to use whilst retaining all the most important features.

They also use advanced caching software and upgraded server hardware with optimised configurations. They also have a whole range of optional performance add-ons to ensure maximum speed.

Good Security

A2 provides a solid level of security, with DDOS protection and free SSL provided out of the box. While their base plans may not have the most robust security amongst their competitors, their pricing is very competitive and they give you the choice to purchase optional add-ons to increase the security of your account specifically.

24/7/365 Support

We’re confident the Guru support team can guide you through any issues that may arise. A2 Hosting provide support via phone, chat and support tickets similarly to most web hosts and their web hosting reviews tend to suggest they do have a kick ass support team.

HOSTPAPA

THE BEST VALUE WEB HOsTiNG IN AUSTRALIA

Overall we think HostPapa is a great web hosting provider. They have a solid tech stack with good speed and great uptime, they cover the bases from a security perspective and their 24/7 customer support is multi-channelled which we think creates a great user experience.

HOSTINGER

MOST COST EFFECTIVE WEB HOSTING

In considering the best Australian web hosting we do need to cater to all budgets, so we of course need to advise which web hosting service is the cheapest option. Our pick for cheapest web hosting Australia has on offer is Hostinger.

Cons

Best Web Hosting Based On Price

Their speed is solid, their support is good and their security is great as they offer a CloudLinux and LVE containerized environment as well as complete DDoS protection which gives us a lot of confidence in the security of their web hosting services.

Unlike many hosts who use cPanel as their control panel, Hostinger has built their own custom control panel which is quite clean and intuitive. It makes for a great user experience in navigating the various sections that are part of the dashboard.

In addition to their standard shared web hosting services, they also offer specialised WordPress Hosting, scalable cloud options and VPS hosting for those whose websites require a little more grunt than the lower level offerings provide.

Free Website Builder

All of Hostinger’s web hosting plans come with a free website builder that offers a range of templates to speed up the process of getting a new website live. It is relatively intuitive to use but they also have some great tutorials if you get stuck.

24/7 Support

The support team at Hostinger are available around the clock if the knowledge base and tutorials available don’t help you find the solution you’re after.

Managed WordPress Hosting

We were impressed with Hostinger’s managed WordPress hosting which is the next level up from their shared hosting. They use LiteSpeed servers which are considered some of the fastest available in the web hosting industry.

The WordPress CMS is easily installed with their one-click installer. They also offer an easy to use WordPress staging tool which will help you manage major updates professionally in just a few clicks.

For developers, Hostinger makes life easier, offering the flexibility of pro features such as PHP version control, SSH access, Git integration, WP-CLI and MySQL database manager just to name a few.

CLOUDWAYS

BEST CLOUD WEB HOSTING

For those users looking for the best cloud web hosting then look no further than Cloudways. Their offering is very different from the others featured in this list because while they are a managed hosting service, they have their own custom stack pre-installed on some of the fastest cloud hosting servers from the likes of AWS, Digital Ocean, Google Cloud Platform & Vultr just to name a few.

Cloudways are very popular web hosts for enterprise web application developers due to the flexibility in application management but their offering is also fantastic for ensuring superior performance

If you’re after the best web hosting service for scalability then Cloudways are a fantastic option. Their reliable web hosting allows you to host unlimited websites.

  • Great Scalability
  • 24/7 Support & Knowledge Base

Cons

  • Expensive compared to the other hosting providers featured on this list
  • Less technical users may find their control panel challenging to use
  • Email hosting is not included, must be purchased as an add-on

24/7/365 Customer Support

Cloudways take customer support very seriously, offering 3 tiers of customer support. While their standard support is fantastic, you can purchase additional support packages if you require a higher level of priority.

Their advanced support add-on gives you access to their senior engineers to undertake server error investigations, troubleshoot plugin or theme issues and even provide help with database optimisation to ensure superior performance.

Superior Speed & Uptime

Cloudways are one of the fastest hosts we reviewed. Their custom PHP stack includes some of the latest technology in this type of hosting space. Their caching setup is particularly impressive with both Varnish & Memcached running on Nginx servers. They also have their own custom WordPress caching plugin called Breeze. Read more about Cloudways performance features.

Paramount Security

Multiple layers of security protect your website if you choose Cloudways as your web host of choice. Cloudflare Enterprise is the first layer of protection against hackers. They then use dedicated IP ranges with prioritised routing to prevent DDOS attacks whilst maintaining availability and speed. The third layer of protection is their custom Web Application Firewall (WAF) which analyses 32 million requests per second.

CRUCIAL

BEST AUSTRALIAN WEB HOSTING PROVIDER

If you’re looking for an Australian based web hosting company then we suggest looking at Crucial. Their Sydney based team claim to be some of the best engineers and technicians in the business. Their hosting stack is built on top of the line Dell server technology with quality DDOS protection and market leading redundancy. They have good quality standard cPanel hosting but also optimised WP hosting.

  • $22.90 / month (AUD)
  • 30-Day Money Back Guarantee

Pros

  • Australian Based Company
  • 24/7 Support & Knowledge Base
  • Unlimited Email Accounts
  • Daily Backups
  • Free SSL Certificates
  • 50GB SSD Disk Space
  • 99.9% Uptime Guarantee

Cons

  • Expensive compared to the other hosting providers
  • No live chat support
  • You have to pay for website migration

LIMITED USERS PER SERVER

Crucial are very mindful of maintaining a high level of performance so they limit the resources per user account and also limit the number of users per server. In doing so they ensure there are always adequate resources available for each client.

GOOD SPEED FOR AUSTRALIAN WEBSITES

Given they are based in Sydney it is no surprise that their baseline server speed is going to be good for users in Australia and they certainly deliver fast load times. They also provide good uptime guarantees.

24/7/365 CUSTOMER SUPPORT

Just like every web host on our list, Crucial provide around the clock customer support via phone and support tickets. Our only gripe would be that they don’t offer live chat support like most of the other international providers.

A GOOD RANGE OF OPTIONS

Just like many of our other top picks, Crucial service customers at all levels. Their web hosting services include standard cPanel or performance optimised shared hosting, as well as a range of different VPS hosting options. If you’re an agency they also offer reseller hosting so you can host your client sites with them and they take care of all the heavy lifting from a systems administration point of view.

BLUEHOST

RELIABLE WORDPRESS HOSTING

We had to include Bluehost in our list of the best web hosting choices available for Australia. They have been around since 2003 and have a long track record of being one of the most reliable WordPress hosting options in the market. They are also one of the cheaper hosting options so definitely worth considering in the mix.

  • $4.33 / month (AUD)
  • 30-Day Money Back Guarantee

Pros

  • Free Domain Name
  • Free SSL Certificates
  • 10GB SSD Disk Space
  • 24/7 Customer Support
  • 99.9% Uptime Guarantee
  • Good Security

Cons

  • No Australian Data Centre
  • Slower Than Other Options

CUSTOM WEBSITE BUILDER

Bluehost have built their own custom website builder which is based in WordPress. Unlike a traditional WordPress site it is more locked down to help non-technical users avoid breaking things. It has a drag and drop interface so is a decent option for creating a nice looking website without needing to know any code.

24/7 Support

Bluehost do have a very extensive knowledge base and they also offer 24/7 Customer Support via Live Chat & Phone. Reviews of their support are mixed with some people reporting longer wait times to speak with a support team member but from our own experience we found the support to be relatively good.

HOW TO CHOOSE A WEB HOST

So we’ve given you our opinion on who are some of the best web hosts available in Australia but how do you choose which is the best web host for you?

DECIDE ON A MAXIMUM BUDGET

Obviously you aren’t going to choose a host that you can’t afford, so now that you have some idea of what the various recommended hosting providers are charging, consider your own budget and rule out any of the providers who’s pricing is above that threshold. Make sure you are aware of the renewal price for the plan you are considering, not just the sign up price as most hosting companies will give you a deal when you first sign up but the renewal prices will be higher.

CONSIDER YOUR LOCATION

We always recommend choosing a web host with a data centre in the country where the majority of your website users are located. Given this review is about the Australian hosting then I’ll assume you and your target audience are based in Australia, so choosing a web host with an Australian based data centre would be ideal if possible. If not, then definitely look into the option of using a CDN.

SERVER Speed

It is not only important for search engine rankings but also general user experience. Website users are becoming accustomed to super fast page load speeds on most enterprise websites, so they become frustrated if your website loads slowly and will likely click the back button and find another website which loads faster. So choose the fastest web hosting available within your budget range.

UPTIME GUARANTEE

Nobody wants their website going down due to server outages, so be sure to choose a web host with an uptime guarantee of 99.9% or higher. If you calculate the actual potential for downtime even at 99.9% over the course of a year that 0.1% still equates to 525 minutes downtime which seems like a lot so you don’t want to go with a host whose uptime guarantee is below that. Now of course, that doesn’t mean you will experience that amount of downtime, they just need to cover themselves legally in case their is some unforeseen issue.

SECURITY

We are seeing a significant increase in security breaches across the internet this year so it is important to choose a web host who has a high level of security. Free SSL, Custom WAF and frequent Malware scans are super valuable features from a security perspective. If you can afford web hosting with good DDOS prevention then definitely pay the extra money.

SUPPORT

Fingers crossed you won’t encounter too many issues with your web hosting but if you do you want to know that your web hosting company has your back. You definitely want to choose a host that has 24/7 support via phone and live chat at a minimum.

DO YOU HAVE A DOMAIN?

There are a number of web hosting options where a domain name will be thrown in for free. If you need a domain name then consider choosing a web host where the domain is included. Just be sure to confirm the renewal price for the domain and make sure you are comfortable with that as there may be better prices through other domain name retailers.

DO YOU NEED EMAIL HOSTING?

While most web hosts include email hosting within their web hosting plans, it is still worth considering whether you want to host your emails within your web hosting account. We generally recommend using a cloud hosting provider for emails such as Google Workspace or Office 365 for improved spam filtering and also for web hosting portability. If you choose to move to a different web host and you have your emails hosted in the account you also need to migrate the emails on server which can be a painful process for the uninitiated.

DO THEY HAVE ADEQUATE RESOURCE ALLOWANCES?

All the hosts on this list are relatively generous with their resource allowances but it is important to consider this factor in choosing the right host. If you intend to upload lots of photos to your website then you might want to choose a web host with higher SSD Storage allowances. While 10GB should be enough for the average website user we have experienced situations where clients with many photo galleries on their website can user up a lot of storage space over time.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

In our opinion the best web hosting companies in Australia for the most common types of websites are:

They provide fast hosting with good security and great customer support whilst still being affordable to the average website owner. Our reviews above go into more detail about the pros and cons for each provider and hopefully will help you find an affordable web hosting solution.

If we had to pick one web host then it would be Siteground.

Ideally if you can afford to choose a hosting company that has an Australian based data centre then that will definitely help with your website speed, which in turn will help with your website SEO. If you can’t afford an Australian based web host then don’t worry, there are other things you can do to speed up your website such as using a CDN, adding additional website caching and implementing other forms of website speed optimisation such as lazy loading images and script optimisations which can be done using plugins if you are using a CMS like WordPress.

If we’re being technically correct, the concept of hosting a website “in Australia” does mean it should be hosted in an Australian Data Centre. Therefore the cheapest web hosting in Australia would be from Siteground, whose prices start at $2.99 per month if you happen to get their black Friday deal.

Generally speaking small business websites will use shared hosting to keep the costs down, therefore providers like SitegroundHostingerHostPapa & A2 Hosting are all great options as they provide the small business website owner with everything they need –  intuitive user dashboards, one-click installs for popular applications, good support, security and fast baseline server speeds.

So when we talk about a truly Australian Web Hosting service we are talking about companies whose web hosting is operated entirely within Australia. There are a lot of options if you want an Australian based web hosting company but you generally either pay more to get the same level or quality or you sacrifice on quality. Our pick of the Australian web hosting providers would be Crucial

The best hosting for beginners are those that have an intuitive dashboard experience and great support. If you plan to build your website with a content management system like WordPress then you must choose a host with a one-click installer and a simple process for adding an SSL certificate to your website with the ability to force SSL. A hosting company like Siteground does this really well.

When considering SEO as part of your hosting choice there are 2 main factors we would suggest as being important – Server Speed & Data Centre Location. If your business is based in Australia and targeting Australian customers then it would be great to choose a hosting provider with an Australian Data Centre if you can afford it. Server Speed is probably the most important overall, so if you can’t afford to go with a company that hosts in Australia then choose the fastest web hosting provider from the overseas options.

When considering which type of hosting is the best for your website it comes down to what type of website you are operating and what objectives you are trying to balance. The most common types of hosting are:

  • Shared Hosting
  • WordPress Optimised Hosting
  • VPS Hosting
  • Dedicated Hosting
  • Cloud Web Hosting

For users who are running a standard informational website and your number of visitors is less than 1,000 per month, Shared Hosting is perfectly suitable. If you have higher traffic levels and you have the budget for it, then upgrading to a one of the other hosting types will improve speed and user experience.

When you are running an e-commerce website then shared hosting is not really optimal for scalability so you’d be better to choose a WordPress Optimised Hosting if you are using WordPress or perhaps a VPS type option.

VPS Hosting & Dedicated Hosting are more typically used for Enterprise websites.

Probably the most significant change in choosing a web hosting in 2022 is the increased focus on Core Web Vitals if you’re considering ranking in search engines like Google. This wasn’t as important a couple of years ago but it has become very apparent that if you want to rank you need to appease the CWV God.

As a result web hosting server speed has definitely become more important than ever, so whatever you do, make sure to choose one of the fastest web hosts within your budget.

Yes, there are a number of companies that offer free web hosting in Australia but we don’t recommend it. When you compare what is included with companies like 000webhost.com in their free hosting plan versus their paid plans, you can see their free plans are very restricted and you will likely encounter resource limit issues, if not from the outset, in the near future. Given how many cheap hosting services there are to choose from we think it is definitely worth spending the small amount of money to ensure you have a minimum level of quality in your hosting plan.

Typically you will purchase a domain name such as yourdomainname.com.au through a registered domain name retailer. You then need to host that domain somewhere in order to use it for sending and receiving emails and/or operating a website. Domain Hosting (DNS Hosting) is a system that holds a set of records that designates where emails should be routed to for your domain name and also where users should be routed to in order to visit your website.

So if you intend to operate both emails and a website using your domain name you will need domain hosting, web hosting and email hosting.

This is a common question we receive from our clients and in our opinion we feel that cloud hosted email services such as Google Workspace & Office365 provide superior spam filtering. Given they are hosted independently of your website, this setup also allows for better website portability, meaning that if you want to change web hosting companies you don’t have the hassle of having to migrate your the emails on your server also which can be quite tedious for the non-technical user.

The acronym CDN stands for Content Delivery Network and is basically a group of connected servers, often spread out all over the world. Their purpose is to optimise the speed at which users can access your web content. A service like Cloudflare is one of the most popular CDNs available.

Google is primarily a search engine and not a web host, but they do offer a website building platform known as Google Sites or via your Google Business Profile. The issue with these platforms is that it does not allow you to use your own custom domain name, it will always be housed on a subdomain of Google.

From our testing we believe that Cloudways is the fastest web host in Australia. Now their pricing is on the higher side but you definitely get what you pay for. If you don’t have the budget or aren’t willing to spend the money on Cloudways we would recommend Siteground as the fastest web host amongst the cheaper options available.

GoDaddy are a juggernaut and are one of those domain and hosting companies that do best job of marketing on the planet. Is GoDaddy hosting any good though? From our experience in working with clients who have sites hosted on GoDaddy we believe there are much better options available. We have personally found their standard shared hosting to be quite slow for WordPress websites. The user interface for their dashboard also leaves quite a lot to be desired as it is very busy and certain features are non-intuitive.

You most certainly can host your own website but you need to be aware of the requirements for doing so. In order to become your own web host you need to either know how to or learn to set up web server software on your computer. You must ensure your computer is always turned on as users will be connecting directly to your computer to download your website files to their browser. One other thing to note is that you need to check whether your Internet Service Provider has any bandwidth limitations that may prevent you from using your internet connection for hosting your website.

We often get asked about Crazy Domains as a hosting provider and while we definitely recommend then as a great company to purchase your domain through, our past experience with their hosting products has been lacklustre. Every site I have encountered that was hosted on Crazy Domains had slow page load speed.

As a developer I found my experience with their customer support team very frustrating as they seem to have a set script for their replies to questions around site speed.

When testing with Google’s Pagespeed tool we found there was a slow server response time. We had already completed all the standard optimisations so we knew the issue was at the hosting server level but their support continued to insist the issue was with WordPress. I personally would not recommend hosting your website or emails through Crazy Domains as they are not a specialist hosting company.
